Abutilon Megapotamium or Trailing Abutilon brings a touch of the exotic to my South Canterbury winter
garden. Frost tolerant – and in the summer tolerant of dry – this shrub grows up to the eaves of our
bungalow bringing much needed winter cheer. Flowers/bracts are red and yellow, hanging like little
lanterns with a number of flowers on each branch. This shrub flowers for months on end, most of the year
in fact. Prune it back whenever it needs a tidy and the shrub just keeps flowering. I have one growing by
my front door where flower power as I enter the home is much prized year-round. In Winter here, where
temperatures can drop as low as -4 to -6 degrees Centigrade it seems extraordinary to me that I can enjoy
this tropical looking beauty from Brazil.
I will have half a dozen of these for sale in Spring 2018.
